Salta is tucked away in the Lerma Valley, 1,187 metres above sea level at the foot of the 20 de Febrero and San Bernardo mountains.
Here, the sandy rock formations are famous for their beautiful cocktail of green, orange and silver tones, while the city is steeped in its past - its Diaguita-Calchaqui and Inca roots and its 16th-century Spanish colonial architecture. Just outside of the city, House of Jasmines can be found up a tree-lined driveway that leads to a farmhouse owned by actor Robert Duvall and his wife, Luciana.
Once a century-old ruin, this is now a boutique farmhouse hotel - opened in 2004 - with seven rooms. All have sturdy wrought-iron four-poster beds, all are filled with antique goodies and all are perfumed by the surrounding gardens.
Pick one of the two suites that have panoramic views and lead out onto the garden. There is a nicely sized pool to go with the 300-acre farm. The Salta province is bordered by Chile, Bolivia and Paraguay, as well as six Argentine provinces.
